How do relationships with parents shape their children’s personality?

Parents often act as role models that children follow as they grow up. Children can’t really understand how important their parents will become later in their life, but as they grow up to become full-fledged adults, parent-children relationships become more and more important. A cold and distant father may cause children to constantly feel inferior while an overbearing mother may lead to indecisive children. Parents are the gatekeepers of society; they guide and teach their children how to interact in the real world. They always want the best for their children and love them to death, so why do some parents portray stoicism? Some may believe that constantly expecting more from their children will push them and while that is true to an extent, children need to know that their efforts are not going to waste. Without praise, they may lose motivation and feel discouraged about themselves. The role of father and mother is very different and has different reactions on children. Stereotypical mothers are generally nurturing and patient while fathers are stern and forgiving. Of course, this does not mean that all parents must be nurturing or forgiving so their child can be successful, that is just how the majority of parents act throughout history. Nurturing parents are also not the only reason why children are successful; it just helps. Parents’ personalities may influence how children date in the future and interact with their friends. From the beginning of their lives, children are dependant on their for life, and the way their parents interact with them and others is crucial to how children view the world. Children may mimic their parents or do the opposite depending on how their parents treat them, and the influence of parents is often echoed throughout generations upon generations.

  1. This is too true. Everyday I take on actions just how my parents do. Sometimes when my parents do things, I say I would never do that but really I find myself struggling not to. Some parents are just too prevalent in lives, that's why in college most people find themselves.
